Rain, rain, blow away

August 28th, 2007 by James

Not content with controlling a large portion of Staffordshire’s tourist dollars, Alton Towers are now looking to control the weather too.  Apparently they’re looking at a technique originally developed in Communist Russia that aims to prevent it raining.

Rain-seeding involves firing silver iodide into clouds in a bid to make them empty over an unimportant area (Stafford? ;-)).

In addition to Russia, China is a big fan of the process and are due to use it to ensure a dry and pollution free Olympic Games in Beijing next summer.

However, I doubt residents of Stoke-on-Trent will be so excited when their town gets turned into Soak-on-Trent.

Perfect weather for rollercoasters

June 12th, 2006 by James

At last! Sunshine, blue skies, hot weather. Perfect for a bit of rollercoaster riding.

That’s exactly what BBC South Today’s weather presenter thought too as she presented the weekend weather live whilst riding Cobra at Paultons Park.

A Chance of Snow?

February 28th, 2006 by James

Looks like a lot of the country is getting some snow at the moment. None here in Surrey at the moment, but I’m on the lookout.

Me, and the triumphant return of SnowCam that is!

What are Showery Outbreaks?

October 5th, 2005 by James

First we have the dumbed down whizzing-zooming dirty brown weather map, now the Met Office are trying to make the BBC’s forecasts “simpler” to understand.

Apparently most of the country are incapable of understanding terms such as “showery outbreaks” or “chilly in isolated areas”. Our farmers are no longer able to determine that, while hot sunny weather is great news for most of the country, it isn’t good for them if their fields need some water.

A Met Office spokesman said: “This is not an attempt to dumb down the weather”. In that case, why are they doing it? I don’t have a problem understanding what the forecaster is saying. If anything, since they changed the weather graphics, the forecaster is now the only way of understanding what’s going on.

It has finally stopped raining here and there’s a rainbow in the sky. Coinciding with sunset, its making for some very strange lighting outside this evening.
