We Will Remember Them
Today is Remembrance Sunday.
Bringing together those who fought alongside fallen comrades, the families of those who lost loved ones, and those who just wish to pay their respects to people who lived and died to ensure our freedom, it is a unique annual occasion in the life of our nation.
Remembrance Sunday falls on the closest Sunday to Armistice Day, November 11th, which marks the day eighty six years ago when at the eleventh hour the guns fell silent, finally spelling the end of the First World War.
At eleven o’clock, the country pauses for two minutes of silence to reflect, to remember the dead of that war and every conflict that has followed.
This year, our attention is turned to the ongoing conflict in Iraq, where seventy four British servicemen have died. But every year the list of the glorious dead grows longer. There has been only one year since 1918 when there have been no British casualties.
Each name engraved on the war memorials throughout the country, each gravestone in military cemeteries spread across the globe, every name on the memorials for those of no known grave, holds behind it a person who gave their life for their country. For each person is a family who mourn.
Today, we remember their sacrifice - we will remember them.
